The Twelfth Street Jazz Project

These photos are the result of an evening spent roaming the alleys of DC with the guys from The Twelfth Street Jazz Project.  We had a loose, low-key kinda shoot where we wandered the area looking for fun backdrops and cool lighting.  I was able to shoot the whole thing with just one light on a lightstand covered with a softlighter.  I then tweaked the lighting in Lightroom to add some mood to the environment.  It was a great adventure and I look forward to photographing these guys again.

You can find out more about the band here: www.twelvejazz.com/

Mixed media

Last December I photographed Armando Batista for his “I love New York” publicity material.  In addition to the photos in the previous post we played around with some superhero-type poses to channel his inner superman.  When he got back to New York he worked with the artist Raye Leith to create a very graphical painting of the skyline that captured many elements of the city in a chaotic fashion.  I combined the original photo and the painting to produce this fun piece of work that should represent the mood that Armando needs for his upcoming show.

I heart NY

Armando is from New York City.  Armando loves New York City.  Armando happens to be an actor and wanted to capture that love in a photo while doing actor-y things (aka hamming it up in front of the camera).  So while he was a student at the University of Maryland we booked a rehearsal room at the Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center and went crazy.  The light setups were very simple – usually just one main light and maybe a hair light.  I was more interested in letting Armando move around, wave his arms, and just be dramatic without worrying about precise lighting.  It was a lot of fun and it reminded me why I love working with actors.  Once they get in front of the camera anything can happen.

The not-so-Brady Bunch

We needed to create a postcard to get the word out about new faculty at the Smith School but we wanted something fun.  What better way to introduce a group than with a grid of heads on blue background?  The faculty and staff should get a kick out of it although I doubt many of the students will get the reference…

The Philly Sports Scene…

is pretty hardcore and this man helped create it.  Ed Snyder is the current owner of the Philadelphia Flyers along with the Wells Fargo Center and was recently the owner of the 76ers.  For being such a successful guy he was very nice and accommodating while I fumbled about with my lights and gave out disjointed posing directions during our shoot for Smith Business Magazine.  While I was hoping to photograph him on the ice I was happy to get some good shots outside his office.  If I get the chance to photograph him again maybe next time he’ll let me shoot some hoops on the court.
